Pancho is doing great.  He adjusting to his new home well.  I was a little worried Saturday because he wouldn't eat, but he now is eating everything (fruit, his pellets and seed mix).  I will send pics of him in his new habitat soon.  He has been so sweet and friendly as all the children have been able to handle him without any trouble.  At first he seemed a little scared (which was to be expected really) but he is doing just fine now.  Thanks for everything, and I will keep you updated.  Oh and he says Hello quite clearly!

"Lila"

Pineapple

Greencheek

Female

Hi Lisa
Our baby has a name - Lila.  She is very active and has already taken to both Hendrik and me.  I get quite a reaction from her when I come home.  She hangs on the front door of her cage or paces back and forth on the floor grate until I open the door and pick her up.  Sometimes she flies directly to me when I have her on the playtop.  I am not encouraging this behavior and put her back in the cage when she does this.  Lila likes whole wheat bread and strawberries.  I have also given her some scrambled eggs which she likes a lot. Lila likes to take a bath in her water cup so I frequently change her water.  I've tried putting a pan in the sink but she didn't like that.

I'm taking her to your vet on Saturday for her free check-up.  Do you recommend I get a UV lamp for her?  Do you use those for your birds?  She won't be outside very much and the book I have says they need 12-16 hrs of UV light a day. That's kind of unrealistic.  Any practical advice is appreciated.  Thanks.

Hi Lisa,

Sorry I haven't been in touch lately, but I've been very busy with Roscoe and getting my house remodeled (yuck!).  Well, he's been with me a month now, and he's doing great.  He eats constantly, maybe a little too much for entertainment, but at his age, I'm not holding back and giving him whatever he likes.  He still is getting Zupreem, and he loves his pellets just as much as he loves his fresh food, so that's good.  He's gotten a little taller, and he's filling out a lot, but I'm not sure if he'll get much bigger (but it won't be for lack of eating!).  Maybe, we'll see.  To be honest with you, I was really surprised to see how big he was when he came out of his crate.  He's super curious, very independent, and getting rather vocal.  He whistles all the time now (wolf whistle and come-here whistle), and he's making lots of other sounds to explore his vocal range.  He's starting to say hello, but only quietly to himself, and I guess it'll be a while before he gains his confidence there, but I believe I may have a little prodigy on my hands.  He's very smart!  But, as much as I've been trying to socialize him with other people from the very beginning, he likes to growl at anyone but me.  I'm trying to get him away from that behavior, but I don't want to force him into anything uncomfortable for him.  So that's going a bit slowly.  He took to me right away, though, so I thought he'd be fine with anyone else, but he's much more cautious with other people.  Anyway, I had a question for you.  Do you have a Laughing Kookaburra in your aviary?  Or has he ever heard recordings of one?  I could swear that earlier today I heard him do that call (softly) while he was singing along with my music (by the way, he LOVES music...mostly the Beatles, and old mellow stuff).  I know he's just figuring out what he can do, but it was a little too close for just playing around.  But maybe I'm wrong, and he just has a jungle groove.  Just wondering.  Anyway, I couldn't be happier with Roscoe...I'm still a bit amazed that I found him the way I did and we've bonded so quickly.  He is a perfect companion, and I couldn't have hoped for a better fit.  As you told me, he's really sweet.  He loves to be pet, I can handle him in any way without him getting upset with me (although he still does his exploratory beaking).  He doesn't nip, though, and he loves having his beak rubbed and cleaned off.  I just can't wait until his primaries grow back out, because he really, really, really wants to fly again (from what I see).  He's a little chewer, too.  He's already destroyed one perch (in only a few weeks!) so I know I've gotta look ahead and get some manzanita or something else that he can't so easily demolish.  But he's very interactive and social (with me), so that's good.  I guess that's about it.  I've attached some pictures of him for you.  Some are earlier than others, but don't trust the date stamp on these photos, my camera's wrong (although if you want to do the math, 2/23/2011 is today according to my camera).  Hope to hear back from you soon!

Hi Lisa,
Here is the girl in her favorite spot, on the back of the couch.  She seems to be doing well.  She is very confident, not easily spooked by the dogs, thank goodness.  She was hesitant to eat anything other than the seeds at first but now is doing better, eating both the pellets and willing to try all veggies and fruits I give her.

I have a question for you.  Is it okay that I have scented candles burning in the living room where I have her cage?  It is a big room but the candles do put out quite a lot of smell.

 Thanks,
Susan Vernon

Hi Lisa,

Hope you're well.  We are doing great. Roxie is awesome.  Quite a personality.  She definitely know what she likes and dislikes and is quick at letting us know.  She's doing great though and she has grown to know us all, she only barked at the boys the first three days.  And she is My baby, when she hears my voice she starts to whistle away and if I don't go to her she'll fly to where I'm at.

She's a great eater, eats pretty much everything we give her.  She hasn't been eating any pellets for the last two weeks though and the seed I got her, I don't think she likes much.  She'll pick thru it and only eat the portion that was in the one you gave us.  So I guess I better find that particular one.  If you wouldn't mind telling me where you get it at, I've been to all the ones I know of and I can't find it.

I attached a picture of her, as you can see she's beautiful.  Thanks for doing a great job with her.

Hi :)

I've had my cinnamon green-cheek baby from your ranch for 6 months now and I've been meaning to thank you again for a wonderful pet. I've named her Daenerys (Dany for short) after a character she reminds me of in the "Game of Thrones" series, and she's an active, feisty, bossy, cuddly, affectionate, and acrobatic little thing :) She's gone through her first molt now and has beautiful coloring. Her feathers are impeccable and she gets compliments at the vet's office for having perfect tail feathers.

She loves to play with hair ties, wadded up paper towels and tissue, bottle caps, buttons, and her many toys in her big cage (she's spoiled rotten). She likes to steal water and ice from my glasses when I'm not looking. She eats Lafaber and Harrison's organic bird food along with treats of fresh fruits and veggies, seeds, and foraging toys. She sleeps in her little furry "Happy Hut" tent (her nest).

She loves having her head scratched (She knows what "head scratches" means now). She's potty trained (to an extent). She knows not to poop on people and she knows the command "go potty" when she's in an appropriate place. She knows "come here" and "no". She takes baths in her water dish. She loves to "sing" (screech) along with music and the TV. Her favorite band right now is "The Black Keys" and her favorite movies are those with explosions and lots of noise! :)

I've attached some pictures for you to see how she's settled.

Conure

Hi Lisa:

I just wanted to send an email to let you know how well Aiya has done on her first day with us.  She has been so sweet and affectionate, and has already warmed up to all of us.  I've attached a few pictures.

Just before I sent this to you she just about fell asleep nuzzling and hiding in our daughter Abby's hair, and we've come to learn that she loves to explore ears and fingernails too!!  She's very sweet and smart, and as they say about green cheek conures, very curious!  She's enjoyed testing the toys and space of her cage and her play stand (although she uses everything BUT the perches to navigate the stand it seems! lol)

The first time we opened the cage door to let her explore on her own, she was a natural.  She took a bit of time to realize she was ok to leave the cage, but once she got her confidence up, she was out and back on our shoulders!  She easily moves from her play stand, to one of us, and back when she pleases, and it's great to see her so comfortable.  We've had no problem at all with her responding to a calm "no" when she has happened to (as a puppy would) nip just a bit too rough.  She's got such a great personality and more than ever, we're all looking forward to the years we've got ahead with our new companion!

Sincerely,The Trop Family

I can tell this little one has a lot of personality! Our dog comes up to the bird cage, and he comes over to say hello to the dog. So cute, and he's already chirping to us when we come over to him.

I probably will have some questions, so thank you for the offer. It's been years since our last bird, and it's fun to finally have one again.

The Ernst Family "Toby"

Chaco

Blue Fronted

Amazon Male

Hello Lisa,

This email truly is very-very overdue.  There have been countless times that I wanted to write and tell you about our boy.  We got "Toby" from you in 2005, he was that surprise hatch of Blue Fronts in September I believe it was.  We patiently waited for him to join our family and it was one of the most wonderful additions ever!  Toby is funny, never stops talking and loves to sing opera!  (not that we listen to it, he just heard it once on the TV and that was the beginning of his opera career.)  LOL.  And, he is absolutely gorgeous!  He's a big, healthy boy with the most beautiful face and eyes.  Needless to say, we love him completely!  The reason for my "out of the blue" contact is that I asked my vet for a print out of all our birds so I could once and for all set up a nice binder with dates, check ups, etc.  There was Toby's info and Dr. McDonald (who I know you know) talked about your operation and what a nice job you do.  We both agreed that Toby was one of the most perfect examples of a Blue Front and he always compliments what a beautiful bird he is.  Scott is a great vet and really nice person to say the least.  He has helped us quite a bit with our "flock" as we've gone from minimal pet bird owner to modest breeder as well.  We have parrotlets and green cheeks and have just recently begun raising linnies.  I have a pair of Hahns that I was hoping to breed, gorgeous birds, but Scott feels they might actually be siblings based on the band numbers.  :(  Very disappointing...  It's a shame that there are breeders out there that don't really follow any sort of good business and safety practices.

We got into breeding when my husband became disabled.  It gives him a sense of purpose and the birds truly keep him company in a special way since he is more or less a prisoner at home during the days.  He no longer can drive so finding something to occupy him and keep him sane was a challenge at first, but the birds did the trick!  We love our crazy house of feathers and wanted you to know that Toby is second in command behind our 35+ year old blue and gold.  He is a true reflection on the care and commitment you make to breeding.  Thank you Lisa.  As far as a pet bird goes, you'd be the only one I would ever get another baby from.  One day... that time will come and I hope you are still loving it as much as in the past.

Take care and best wishes!

Joyce Ernst
